Who is the greatest?

“…the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven!” (Matthew 18:3)

What are children like? They are trusting and unpretentious. They don’t think about themselves and the image they portray to people around them. They don’t think of what others see and the view and opinion others hold regarding them. They are not self-centred. They will not hold against you ill feelings because you had to discipline them.

If you pinch a baby it will cry, however the next moment it will give you a smile. A forty day old baby had been pricked several times by nurses in an effort to collect blood for some tests. It cried as though it were inconsolable. However, once the nurses finished and were dressing it, it began to happily gurgle and smile at them.

A child speaks exactly what is on its mind. A child does not demand recognition nor does it hunger for fame. A child will unconditionally love its parents and will trust them wholeheartedly. A child has no cares because its needs are tenderly provided for by those who love him or her. Its parents feed, clothe and care for their child as its wellbeing is totally dependant on them.

Lord, like a small child I lean on you. Create in me a clean and simple heart which will learn to trust you completely; to lean on you even when I may be feeling burdended knowing that you will take wonderful care of those you love you.
