Phillip reads and explains the message given by God to the church in the ancient city of Smyrna, also referred to as the poor little rich church. At the time, Smyrna was a large and prosperous city and was also known as the City of Temples because it entertained a large variety of pagan religions. Gods message to his little church, however, was one of encouragement and promise because it suffered tribulation and persecution at the hands of the people of that city. Today, those who hold true to Gods Word also face persecution but they are encouraged to endure. In so doing, they get to enjoy Gods comfort, reassurance and promise of eternal life.
