The Cage

The bush path made its way through the cassava plants that grew tall on either side. The women who had been tending their farms were making their way homewards, tools and loads balanced on their heads. Fierce noonday heat had given way to pleasant evening cool.

Near the trees some lads, free from school, were busy. They had built a cage with bamboo and were using it to catch birds. These beautiful little creatures were enjoying the wide-open spaces, free to fly all around until they were tempted by the tasty corn put inside the cage by the boys. They were deceived by the sight of other birds in the cage and without suspecting danger they ventured too close. Suddenly the door swung shut and the birds were prisoners for life.

God made us, like those birds, to be free and to enjoy life with Him. But we have been lured away by sin. Satan has deceived us and made us his prisoners. Life under his control is a poor substitute for the real thing. Many people believe it provides what they call “pleasure”. Others want to be free from sins that spoil their lives but can find no way of escape. Jesus said, “everyone who sins is a slave to sin”. (John 8:34).

Can we find freedom? Jesus answered the question by saying, “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed”. (John 8:36).

He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.

This Christian song reminds us that the Lord Jesus died on the Cross for us. The Bible says, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree.” (1 Peter 2:24). We must face up to the fact that we are all guilty of many sins against God and other people. We must thank Jesus for dying for us and ask Him to forgive us. He will certainly answer us if we do this wholeheartedly. Forgiveness brings freedom. God promises, “call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honour me”. (Psalm 50:15).

How does it feel to be free? It brings great relief. Then God’s peace and joy fills our hearts and it feels good to be alive. Would you like to be free? The Lord Jesus is waiting to help you today. He will release you from the “cage” of sin if you ask Him.
