Perspective - Can a mother forget? |
| Date Written: May 25, 2007 |
| Many hearts were touched recently with the news of baby Catherine being left in a cardboard fruit box outside at the Dandenong Hospital, around 6am on Mother’s Day. The question posed by the Daily Telegraph, “How could she?” was a haunting one. It tugged at the heartstrings of parents that have children, of parents that can’t have children, and many others. What followed was a hot debate about the mother, the father, and everything in between. What prompted the baby to be abandoned? What sort of mother (or father) would do such a thing? Where is the mother and does she need help? The finger pointing will continue to remain a question for some time to come. The outpouring of help from many people shows the depth of emotion this young baby has touched in the hearts and minds of many people. The bond between a mother and her newborn child is a strong one and many mothers can testify to that. Under what circumstances would a mother abandon her newborn is a difficult question. That it sometimes happens is a sad fact and whilst we cannot understand the “how” part of the action, the Lord asks, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;” (Isaiah 49:15-16). What a wonderful promise to those that love Him. He will not, He cannot forget His children. That promise helps us deal with the difficulties of the day, the uncertainty of tomorrow and the bleakness of the future, because He will not forget. Jesus said that He has prepared a heavenly home for those that love Him (John 14:1-3) and one day He will return to take them. So the question really isn’t, “Does Jesus love me?” The real question is, “Has He prepared a place for me in heaven?” If you cannot answer that question, may we prompt you to read His love letter, the bible, for the answer. |
