Perspective - A mans home is his castle

Date Written: January 31, 2006
Many have heard the cliché, “A man’s home is his castle”. It generally expresses the idea that a person is free to do what they will in their own home. That lack of inhibition can make the home a sanctuary for our thoughts and emotions, good or bad. We are possibly more genuine in that one environment than in any other.

Even its aesthetics become personal. The décor does not just consist of random objects flung together to fill space. They usually represent our own unique taste, free from external criticism. And on an emotional level, the strains of each can be eased from our home’s mere familiarity, the comfort of knowing there is a place of our own to rest and belong.

Sadly however, the reality is that home’s are destroyed by, to name a few, dysfunctional families, war, and as witnessed recently the wild fires throughout Victoria.

What consolation can be given in tragedies such as these?

Firstly, the enormity of the loss both monetarily and emotionally cannot be trivialised, and both certainly need to be rebuilt. However, there is a third element to the healing that needs to be addressed that is, the spiritual.

If a home can afford us so much both emotionally and mentally, how much more can God, the author of life, fill the core of being, our souls, with the courage and strength to face our daily challenges? Jesus said, “For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.” (Luke 12:23), and also, “Don't collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don't break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21).

Jesus’ words were more than empty platitudes. Their veracity was tested by His own death and resurrection and subsequently by the millions who believed in Him. Before departing this world He comforted His vulnerable disciples with the following words, “In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:2-3).

This same hope can be realised by you today.
