Perspective - Jesus and the Sects

Date Written: August 2, 2005
"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: Ι am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd." (John 10:10,11)

We are living in an age in which sects are doing grievous damage, often under the cover of Christendom with the Bible in their hand. Some people wonder whether Jesus Christ was not Himself the founder of a sect. It is therefore necessary to recall to mind some of His teaching.

The Lord Jesus categorically refused the sects of His time.

He warned against all who would come in His Name, as though they were Christ.

He never taught that a Guru should be obeyed or that money should be given to any organizations.

He insisted on everyone’s personal responsibility before God, which cannot be annulled by any group.

He never advocated suicide, whether individual or collective.

He condemned sexual relationships outside marriage, insisting on marital faithfulness.

His disciples taught that the upbringing of children was the responsibility of their parents, not of any group or organization.

When Jesus was questioned by His judges, He said, “I spake openly to the world; ... in secret have Ι said nothing” (John 18:20). Jesus Christ’s teaching and what He says about God, whom He revealed, is to be found in the Bible, a book that is universally known. It shows us that He sacrificed Himself as an offering for all believers. Read the Bible and believe it!
