Greek Free Church - Perspective
God and Religion
God and Religion
In times of trouble, whether it is of a personal nature, or society’s inability to deal with problems of its own making, many of us turn to the spiritual dimension for inspiration, answers and guidance. It is in such times of crisis that our human nature is seriously challenged and sadly found wanting. Our immediate reaction may be to look around and find religion or a church that best suits my personality and my way of life, one that is “true for us”. No sooner do we entertain these thoughts that we start feeling rather uneasy and unconvinced by the whole process. We feel even less sure of ourselves when challenged about our thoughts.
We are constantly reminded that all religions point to God. Religion exists because of God’s existence and character, because God has no beginning or end, because He is all powerful and all knowing, and His presence is felt everywhere. He is a loving God but at the same time His justice is paramount. After all that is the very reason we turn to God for answers.
How can such a God be the cause for so many different religious outcomes, some similar and others vastly different? How is it that some of the worlds ugliest atrocities, from the distant past to the present, can be linked to one or more of these religions, whether Christian or not? How can a God from whom peace originates be part of any religion that uses violence and unjust means to achieve its ends?
It is obvious that God through Jesus Christ who lived amongst us and died on the cross for my sins and the sins of all humanity did so not to create any religion but to give answers with purpose and meaning.
Man created religion. We created it in our own image, with every intention to be good and wholesome, but instead it is flawed and inadequate. Instead of providing meaningful answers it has become a point of division and separation. We have created a god as we want him to be. Ignoring or at best distorting God’s power, love, grace, patience, mercy, eternity and above all justice. These are the very characteristics that make God tower above all religions to offer me and everyone who believes in Him eternal life, peace and joy that is independent of all the gloom and doom, independent of the materialistic nature in us and certainly not based on any religion.
Finding our spiritual self the inner peace and joy, the certainty of a glorious future eternally in His presence will always remain an illusion when we pursue it on religious grounds. It will only become a reality in our lives if we delve into the simple instructions that God has put in His word, the Bible, and apply simple faith in His word, without all the religious baggage we may be carrying. We can live in our complex world with all its problems and difficulties understanding God and knowing that that it is that simple faith that will take us to eternity. Something that no religion can achieve.
