The London Bombings
The London Bombings
The recent events in London highlight the contrasts in our experience of being human and the associated emotions we feel. On one day the City was celebrating its achievement in winning the right to hold the Olympics in 2012, some seven years away. The next day it was in mourning and shock over the terrible terrorist attack which killed and maimed many people.
It is not surprising that questions about evil the existence of God, the meaning of life and the fragility of our existence arise in times of tragedy. Invariably these questions arose after the bomb attacks but it was no surprise that the same questions did not arise while there were celebrations over an event to happen in seven years time. The purpose and meaning of our existence is felt much more acutely in time of pain.
G K Chesterton said – "Meaninglessness does not come from being weary of pain, meaninglessness comes from being wary of pleasure."
Many of us in the western world live lives of relative affluence and in the midst of that affluence, security and comfort we forget how fragile our existence really is. It is so easy to get lost in a system that hungers after possessions comfort and pleasure that we lose our focus on the important questions and drift into a life that lacks meaning and purpose. Our biggest challenge is not how to ensure our physical security, even though this is important, our biggest challenge is to live lives full of purpose and alignment with the ultimate questions we ask when faced with tragedy.
Jesus Christ stands unique in giving answers to the purpose for our existence and how we can live truly meaningful lives. Jesus Christ is unique because he is the only one who through all of history can claim to be the source of truth and life, not merely one that points to truth and life.
"I am the way and the truth and the life." – The words of Jesus (John 14:6)
