Has our life any direction?

"See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil… Therefore choose life." (Deut 30:15,19)

This question can be understood in two different ways. Both are of great importance.

First, where is my life leading me? What is its sense and its objective? Which port is my ship sailing towards? Is there a sure harbour at the end of the journey? Or will I suffer shipwreck on some reef? Any traveller who went on a journey without knowing his destination would be foolish indeed. Yet in respect of life itself that is precisely what many people do, sometimes drifting aimlessly, waiting for things to start making sense and falling into place.

The question can also be understood in this way: is there any guidance in my life? Is someone directing its course? Maybe many people consider themselves to be the master of their fate or lord over their lives. Then arises the question of how good a master they are. Have they all their actions and reactions under control? Are their decisions wise and their plans and intentions sensible? Do they respect God’s claims and utterances?

The true believer in Christ can answer both these questions as follows: “Jesus is my Lord and my Guide for my life.” The born again believer knows where he is bound for and to whom he can entrust the guidance of his life.

Dear friend, where are you heading for? An unfortunate end far from God, perhaps without even being aware of it? Or heaven under God’s guidance?

"And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 8:32

A Christian finds his guide in the Word of God, and commits the keeping of his soul into the hands of God. He looks for no assurance beyond what the Word can give him, and if his mind is troubled by the cares and fears which assail him, he can go nowhere but in prayer to the throne of grace and to Scripture.
