OK to divorce Alzheimer's wife: TV evangelist

What a sad, sad excuse from a sad, sad "Evangelist"

QUOTE

OK to divorce Alzheimer's wife: TV evangelist
September 15, 2011 - 11:42AM
Source: The Age

Pat Robertson.
US religious broadcaster Pat Robertson has told viewers of his 700 Club television show that divorcing a spouse with Alzheimer's disease is justifiable because the disease is "a kind of death".

During the portion of the show where the one-time Republican presidential candidate takes questions from viewers, Robertson was asked what advice a man should give to a friend who began seeing another woman after his wife started suffering from the incurable neurological disorder.

"I know it sounds cruel, but if he's going to do something, he should divorce her and start all over again, but make sure she has custodial care and somebody looking after her," Robertson said.

Advertisement: Story continues below
The chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network, which airs the 700 Club, said he wouldn't "put a guilt trip" on anyone who divorces a spouse who suffers from the illness, but added, "get some ethicist besides me to give you the answer".

Most Christian denominations at least discourage divorce, citing Jesus' words in the Gospel of Mark that equate divorce and remarriage with adultery.

Terry Meeuwsen, Robertson's co-host, asked him about couples' marriage vows to take care of each other "for better or for worse" and "in sickness and in health".

"If you respect that vow, you say 'til death do us part'," Robertson said during the broadcast on Tuesday. "This is a kind of death."

A network spokesman said on Wednesday that Robertson had no further statement.

Divorce is uncommon among couples where one partner is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, said Beth Kallmyer, director of constituent services for the Alzheimer's Association, which provides resources to sufferers and their families.

"We don't hear a lot of people saying 'I'm going to get divorced'," she said. "Families typically respond the way they do to any other fatal disease."

The stress can be significant in marriages though, Kallmyer said, because it results in the gradual loss of a person's mental faculties.

"The caregiving can be really stressful on a couple of levels," she said. "There's the physical level. There's also the emotional level of feeling like you're losing that person you love."

As a result, she said, it's important for couples to make decisions about care together in the early stages of the illness, when its effects aren't as prominent.

Morning Devotion

June 7

Morning
“Ye that love the Lord hate evil.”
- Psa_97:10
Thou hast good reason to “hate evil,” for only consider what harm it has already wrought thee. Oh, what a world of mischief sin has brought into thy heart! Sin blinded thee so that thou couldst not see the beauty of the Saviour; it made thee deaf so that thou couldst not hear the Redeemer’s tender invitations. Sin turned thy feet into the way of death, and poured poison into the very fountain of thy being; it tainted thy heart, and made it “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” Oh, what a creature thou wast when evil had done its utmost with thee, before divine grace interposed! Thou wast an heir of wrath even as others; thou didst “run with the multitude to do evil.” Such were all of us; but Paul reminds us, “but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” We have good reason, indeed, for hating evil when we look back and trace its deadly workings. Such mischief did evil do us, that our souls would have been lost had not omnipotent love interfered to redeem us. Even now it is an active enemy, ever watching to do us hurt, and to drag us to perdition. Therefore “hate evil,” O Christians, unless you desire trouble. If you would strew your path with thorns, and plant nettles in your death-pillow, then neglect to “hate evil:” but if you would live a happy life, and die a peaceful death, then walk in all the ways of holiness, hating evil, even unto the end. If you truly love your Saviour, and would honour him, then “hate evil.” We know of no cure for the love of evil in a Christian like abundant intercourse with the Lord Jesus. Dwell much with him, and it is impossible for you to be at peace with sin.
“Order my footsteps by thy Word,
And make my heart sincere;
Let sin have no dominion, Lord,
But keep my conscience clear.”

Who are true believers?

True believers are people who believe God. They, therefore, value what God says and stands for; keep His commandments (John 14:15; 1 John 2:3-6); and live a Godly life. Should not they, therefore, like Jesus, love those who hate them (Luke 6:27) and sacrifice their own interest in order to compensate for the offenses their offenders have caused them? God stayed faithful to His people although they abandoned Him and were unfaithful to Him. Should not true believers, therefore, always stay faithful to their spouse; even if their spouse has been unfaithful to them (Hosea 3:1)? In addition, because God is love, true believers will have an absolute trust, that through love all problems can be solved. Should not they, therefore, not resort to law suites (1 Corinthians 6:7), revenge (Romans 12:19) and war (Matthew 5:21-22; Matthew 26:52; Ephesians 2:14-16 & Zech 4:6)?

Who are we?

We are beings that are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Since God is love (1 John 4:8), we as His image are created for love. In creating us, therefore, God invites us to a life of love with Him and our fellow human beings (Matthew 22:36-40). Love, therefore, is at the very center of human existence and the life of our soul. Without it we are devoid of joy and peace; and without love our spirit is dead (1 Cor. 13:1-4). Furthermore, because, God is love, we can never have true love for anyone unless we are free of every form of hate and are in communion with God.

Because, we are created for love, love makes us truly human, gives meaning to our lives, fulfills the innermost yearning of our hearts and brings us peace. All our acts of love are God‘s works, which He performs through us. We share in God’s divinity by allowing divine actions, which are acts of love, through us.

Who will enter God's Kingdom?

Those who are humble (like little children) (Matthew 18:3), forgive others from their heart (Matthew 18:35), take care of the needy (Matthew 25:34-36), listen to the words of God and act on them (Matt 7:21-24); and keep their faith (Ezekiel 18:21) will enter God’s Kingdom. Unfortunately, many search the Scriptures because they think that in them they have eternal life; and refuse to come to Jesus, who is source of eternal life (John 5:39-40). To come to Jesus is to love Him; and to love Him is to keep His commandments (John 14:23-24). His commandment is to love one another the way He loves us (John 12:15). He loved us by staying faithful to the covenant He made with us and freeing us from sin; although we were unfaithful to Him and betrayed Him; and although it involved acceptance of humiliation of infinite magnitude and the most agonizing death.

Why is marital union an act of love?

Marriage is a covenant of love between a man and a woman, in which they unconditionally surrender their entire lives to each other (Ephesians 5:25) to unite them into one common life. They are therefore no longer two but one (Matthew 19: 4-6). Furthermore, they unconditionally surrender their common life to God by their willingness to freely accept children from God (Genesis 1:28). These two commitments make marriage a covenant of love. Similarly conjugal union (within in marriage) is an act of love because it executes the marital commitments by uniting lives of the couple in a procreative act. On the other hand, conjugal union outside the marriage is devoid of love because it lacks the marital commitments. Furthermore, those involved in it abuse their bodies by engaging in an act that unites lives, without uniting their lives (in marriage).

What is eternal life?

Eternal life (John 17:3) is to know God. To know God is to know and accept His ways. Those who know Him, therefore, do His will (Marr 7:21-23). His will is this, that we love one another as He has loved us (John 12:15). He loved us by humbling Himself to take a human form (in the person of Jesus) and suffering the most painful death in order to bring forgiveness to us, who were unfaithful to Him, betrayed Him and killed Him. Eternal life, therefore, is a life that has surrendered its will to God; sacrificed its own interest to serve others; and has forgiven and healed those who have been unfaithful to it, betrayed it and hurt it.

Why divorce is not an option for Christians?

To be a Christian is to follow Christ. To follow Him we must love Him. To love Him is to surrender our life to Him. To surrender our life to Him is to live a life that is His, and not ours. This means that we do and think what He does and thinks. We know that God is always faithful to us although we have been unfaithful to Him, and rejected Him by our sins. Furthermore, He sacrificed His own life so that we may be free of sin and have His life. To be a Christian, therefore, is to do likewise. In addition, since it is God who seals the marriage covenant no one can separate what God has joined together (Matt 19:6); and those who attempt to break this seal go against God. Divorce is therefore, absolutely prohibited for believers (Mk 10:11-12, Luke 16:18; Matthew 5: 31-32); and remarriage after divorce is adultery. Furthermore, a person whose spouse is unfaithful to him/her must stay faithful to his/her spouse just as God is faithful to us even when we reject Him (Hosea 3:1).

God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) and is not pleased with the offerings of those who divorce their spouse (Malachi 2: 13-14). Jesus tells us that before making offering to God, we must reconcile with those with whom we have grievances (Matt. 5: 23-24). Therefore, a divorced person must first reconcile with his/her spouse before making an offering to the Lord.

How to forgive unfaithfulness?

Our relationship with others must be based on love, because God who is love is the source of our life. True love is always unconditional. Therefore, when we love others, we do it irrespective of how they treat us and without expecting anything in return. God loved us first (1 John 4:11) by sacrificing His life for our sins although we rejected Him, were unfaithful to Him and killed Him. He told Hosea (Hosea 3:1), to return to his wife although she was an adulteress. God further told him to love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they were unfaithful to Him. As true followers of Christ we must be in His Spirit by being faithful to our covenant with our spouse, even when there is unfaithfulness and hurt; and bring healing to our spouse by our prayers, sacrifices and support. We must love our spouse just as Christ loves us (Eph 5:25).

Some people quote Matthew’s gospel (5:31-32) to justify divorce in case of unfaithfulness. The word in the Greek text for allowing divorce is porneia (which means incest or fornication). It referred to unlawful marriages between close relatives during Jesus’ time, which were unlawful (Leviticus 18:6-18), because they were incestuous (porneia). Note that the Greek word for adultery in verse 32 is moiceia (not porneia). The exception therefore is for unlawful marriages.

Formula for Peace

1) Surrender our will to God in all matters of our life. We should do this because He is our Father who is infinite in wisdom and love. He demonstrated His love for us when He came as our Redeemer and sacrificed His life so that we (who betrayed Him and were unfaithful to Him) may have His life. We can surrender our will to Him by doing what we think is according to His will; and in our heart be willing to accept whatever result He gives us. This frees us of anxiety and selfishness.

2) Sacrifice our own interest in the process of serving others. This will enable us to love our enemies; treat all human beings as equal, irrespective of their status in life or developmental stage; unconditionally forgive others; and stay faithful to our covenant even when there is betrayal and unfaithfulness.

3) Serve others selflessly and seek no reward for acts of love. Furthermore we should consider the opportunity to serve others as an honor and a gift from God.

We must do the following to achieve the above mentioned goals
1)	Develop intense love for God through prayers; meditation on Jesus’ sacrifice and unconditional forgiveness; scripture reading; confession of our sins; and frequent participating in the Jesus’ sacrificial meal. Furthermore, we must try to be like Jesus in our thoughts, words and actions.
2)	Remove all distractions from our life, so that we can hear God’s voice in the silence of our heart.

How should we love?

Love is the Spirit of selflessness, sacrifice and service. Love therefore is sublime, selfless, sacrificial, pure and unconditional. Those who love, therefore, do not make distinction between friend or foe; will put other’s interest and life ahead of their own; will unconditionally forgive others; will not take revenge; are generous, humble, patient, kind; will never seeks reward for acts of love; and will love others even in face of betrayal and hurt. Furthermore, they will see the opportunity to serve others as a reward, because love is the inner most longing of their spirit and the voice of God that resonates in their heart.
